He studied painting at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath while working as a technician dye-maker. His early abstract paintings with colours reflecting the glamour of city life were followed in the mid-70s by compositions that highlighted the plight of the urban poor. His work with its subdued palette and destructive style resembles, in ways, the work of Anselm Kiefer. His paintings are characterised by their fractured planes, collage-like techniques, and interesting treatment of light and shade. Solo shows of his work have been held at Art Forum Gallery, Singapore; Wallace Gallery, New York; Air Gallery, London; the Museum of Art, Hong Kong and the Nehru Centre, London. He is a recipient of the Lalit Kala Akademi Award, the National Award, the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, the Varnashilpi Venkatappa Award and the Lorenzo De Medici Gold Medal at the Internazionale Dell'Arte Contemporanea in Florence. Arakkal lives and works in Bangalore.
