Arpana Caur
Arpana Caur was born in Delhi in 1954. Her influences include Punjabi folk literature, Pahari miniatures and Indian folk art motifs. Though inspired by local and world events, like communal violence, environment, issues of time, life and death, her main focus has been on capturing the daily activities of women. She has participated in exhibitions at the Saitama, Fukuoka and the Glenbarra Museum, Japan, the Museum of Modern Art, Sao Paolo, Tate Britain, Smithsonian Washington and San Fransisco Asian Art Museum. She is a recipient of a grant from the Lalit Kala Akademi 1985 and the Gold Medal at the Sixth Indian Triennale 1986. She was also curator of the 1986 show on women artists, held at the Festival of India, USSR. Her works are in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Kunst Museum, Dusseldorf; the Hiroshima Museum, Japan; the Singapore Museum of Modern Art; Ethnographic Museum, Stockholm; Bradford Museum, UK; MOCA, USA; Museum of Modern Art in Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh and Bhopal. Caur is Secretary General of the Academy of Fine Arts and Literature, New Delhi. She lives and works in New Delhi.
