One Canvas - Two Masters
"Anarkali" a collaborative effort by MF Husain and Shah Rukh Khan,
Live at the Art for Freedom Auction at Bonhams, London on 7th June 2007.

Art for Freedom was an exciting and unusual auction held on June 7, 2007 at Bonhams, London and continued on June 11, 2007 at Asia House, London. It showcased work by a spectacular range of contemporary Indian artists.

It featured more than 80 canvases by both established masters and a newer generation of cutting edge, emerging voices.

Artists whose works were part of the show include Akbar Padamsee, Jehangir Sabavala, M F Husain, Jogen Chowdhury, Satish Gujral, Anjolie Ela Menon, Paresh Maity, Atul Dodiya, Sunil Das, Shuvaprasanna and Prasenjit Sengupta, among others.

A unique aspect of the Art for Freedom auction was that many of the art works were endorsed by an eminent citizen -either from the world of cinema, music, literature, politics or business -- creating canvases of great curiosity and value. M F Husain and Shah Rukh Khan painted live at the auction venue. The painting “Anarkali” was the first unveiling of “Mughal–e–Azam” the new series from M F Husain.

At a time when there is a gathering buzz around Indian art, and prices of many Indian artists are breaking through the glass ceiling, Art for Freedom presented a tremendous opportunity for art lovers and buyers across the globe. The auction was an unprecedented event, for one it was the most attended show in the history of Bonhams and Asia House. Five hundred guests were expected at Bonhams , more than 1500 showed up. The energy in every room at Bonhams was electric and the buzz was magnificent.
